Online Masterclass Winter Wildlife

Join wildlife photographer and expert Tom Mason for a winter wildlife course focused on photographing local fauna alongside the Norfolk coast. Tom will travel across the county to show you how best to capture a variety of local animals from grey seals and snow bunting to winter ducks and pink-footed geese. He will give you his best tips and tricks for working with wildlife during the winter months. Wrap up warm – it’s going to be a frosty one!

22nd November 2022 - 4pm - 4.20pm

Week one – planning, prep and conservation:

  • Introduction to Tom Mason and the type of work he creates.
  • The history of wildlife in Norwich – migration patterns.
  • Conservation; how to safely photograph animals whilst protecting the surrounding environment.
  • Understanding your style and what to shoot.
  • Summary of what's coming up.

29th November 2022 - 4pm - 4.30pm

Week two - deep dive into gear, planning and prep:

  • Camera selection - what body to choose and why; what settings Tom goes for; how to set up your camera ready for your trip.
  • Lens selection - what lens to choose and why; focus on prime vs zoom, and wide options.
  • Accessories and extras - what you need for a trip like this, and other items to consider dependant on location and travel method.
  • Planning locations and trips.

6th December 2022 - 4pm - 4.30pm

Week three – The art of patience & static shooting:

  • Plan for the day - make a location list and do your research.
  • Camera set up and setting choices to get that perfect shot.
  • Lens choices alongside filters for weather dependant shooting and unpredictable lighting conditions.
  • Composition and angles.
  • Patience and silence are key; lying in wait.
  • Practical shooting tutorial incorporating more creative shots.
  • Always be on the lookout!

13th December 2022 - 4pm - 4.30pm

Week four - photographing birds in flight & nest:

  • Plan for the day - be prepared to be patient!
  • Camera set up and setting choices to get that perfect shot.
  • Lens choices; think about your distances and speed.
  • Approaching your subjects; we'll talk through discrete shooting versus fast capture.
  • Composition and angles.
  • Patience; what are you trying to achieve?
  • Practical shooting tutorial incorporating more creative shots.
  • Take away tips and tricks from the full course.
