Zoom link will be provided prior to the start of this talk. You can book your ticket here.

Tariq Zaidi will discuss his new work, which explores self-expression through fashion and art on the streets of Kinshasa and Brazzaville, Congo. This talk is hosted by the Martin Parr Foundation.

Tariq Zaidi documents a fashion culture known as ‘La Sape, Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes’. (Society of Ambiance-Makers & Elegant People). Its followers are known as Sapeurs (men) and Sapeuses (women). Most have ordinary day jobs such as taxi-drivers, tailors and gardeners, but as soon as they clock out they transform themselves into debonair dandies. Sashaying through the streets they are treated like rock stars – turning heads, bringing ‘joie de vivre’ to their communities and defying their circumstances.

Tariq will be answering questions at the end of this live talk. The event will take place via Zoom. Tickets are £3 / £5 / £10 so please pay what you can afford.
