Film Creative Interviews with Chip Phillips

Join us for an immersive workshop by renowned filmmaker and producer Chip Phillips.

This hands-on event offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from Chip as you explore the captivating world of producing creative interviews.

Working as a freelancer, Chip often films interviews as a one-man band. His take on interview filmmaking is to keep it simple and perfect the fundamentals; lighting, composition and making the most of available space. We’ll explore lens selection, artificial and natural lighting, audio, and most importantly, getting the most out of the interviewee.

During the workshop, you’ll get to shoot alongside Chip, witness his creative process first-hand, ask questions and seek guidance based on your knowledge and experience.

This workshop will cover:

•  Working with the interviewee: What is the purpose of the interview? How do we want the viewer to feel? Considering eye line, camera placement, and different personalities to get the most out of the interview.

•  Lenses: We will look at how lens choice can affect our image and things to consider when pairing lenses for two or three camera shoots.

•  Composition: Getting the most out of the space available, using the available room features to enhance our image, and finding leading lines where possible.

•  Lighting: Key-light placement, backlighting and how fill-lighting can affect the mood of an interview.

•  Audio: Looking at both lavaliere and boom microphones, the benefits of both and when to use them. Hearing how a room can change the captured sound and how to get clean audio.

Chip Phillips is a video producer based on the South Coast, working in a variety of formats including music videos, commercials and documentaries. Having previously worked as a musician, Chip understands the importance audio and music have in shaping a project's narrative. Throughout all his work, the aim remains to produce dynamic, emotive, meaningful video content.
