What you will learn at this event.

Join us in-store for a seminar with award-winning fine art photographer Alys Tomlinson to talk through project work within the realms of documentary photography.

Alys Tomlinson will talk through her latest work, Gli Isolani (The Islanders), published by GOST Books in 2022. The photographs, created using a large-format plate camera, inhabit a hinterland between fiction and reality. Over two years, Tomlinson documented the traditions and customs of the Venetian Lagoon; the project explores the islands of the Venetian Lagoon, Sicily and Sardinia. Inspired by paganism, fables and folklore, the fantastical tales and precious costumes have been passed down generations within these communities.

Signed/ dedicated copies of Gli Isolani will be available to buy. Alys will also be giving a brief, practical demonstration on large-format photography.

This talk will cover:

• An introduction to Alys Tomlinson’s career; how to turn your passion into a job.
• Planning and preparation; what do you need to know?
• Project work; how to create larger bodies of work.
• Practical demonstration of a 5x4 camera
