This four-hour guided photowalk is designed around the unique photographic opportunities created by the autumn season. From golden woodland and fallen leaves to mist, reflections, streams and intricate natural details, the Meanwood Valley Trail becomes a rich and varied photographic landscape.
There will be no scheduled coffee or refreshment breaks. Instead, the four hours will be structured as a continuous photography experience, with regular natural pauses to stop, compose images, change lenses and receive tuition. The emphasis is on slowing down, observing the landscape and making the most of autumn light.
9:30am – 10:00am
Meet at the agreed starting point for introductions, route briefing and camera setup. We'll begin by looking at what makes autumn such a special time for photography. We'll explore:
- Autumn colour and soft morning light.
- Fallen leaves in a woodland atmosphere.
- Texture and pattern seasonal changes.
- Working with muted and vibrant colours.
We'll also look at camera settings and lens choices for the morning ahead.
10:00am – 10:50am
Our first extended photography session takes us into the woodland. Autumn provides an incredible palette of reds, oranges, yellows, browns and greens, but simply photographing colourful trees doesn't necessarily create a strong image. We'll explore how to use:
- Layers of woodland & natural framing.
- Leading lines and backlighting.
- Dappled light & colour contrast.
- Negative space and repetition/patterns.
- Creative challenge, find 3 different ways to photograph the same tree.
10:50am – 11:35am
Autumn gives us an opportunity to move away from traditional landscape photography and concentrate on the details beneath our feet. We'll look for:
- Fallen leaves, leaf patterns, moss, bark, fungi, seeds and acorns.
- Water droplets, textures and natural abstracts.
- Creative Challenge, create a photograph where colour and texture are the main subject.
11:35am – 12:20pm
Following the valley, we'll explore the photographic possibilities around Meanwood Beck. Autumn foliage combined with water can produce beautiful reflections and colour. We'll experiment with:
- Fast shutter speeds, slow shutter speeds, reflections & leading lines.
- We'll also explore how to position yourself to control the relationship between foliage, water and available light.
12:20pm – 12:55pm
We'll move towards wider compositions and begin thinking about the valley as a photographic story. Rather than photographing isolated subjects, we'll look at how to communicate the feeling of autumn in Meanwood Valley. We'll explore:
- Foreground, middle ground and background.
- Atmospheric perspective.
- Environmental portraits.
- Woodland paths.
- Seasonal landscape.
- Human interaction with nature.
- The contrast between the urban environment and countryside.
- Create three images that could appear together in a photographic story about autumn.
12:55pm – 1:20pm
The final photography section is about experimentation. We'll look for unusual compositions and encourage participants to move beyond conventional landscape photography. The aim is to create images that represent your interpretation of autumn, rather than simply documenting the season.
1:20pm – 1:30pm
Before finishing, select your strongest five images from the walk. Your final collection should include:
- A photograph that establishes Meanwood Valley.
- A strong seasonal image.
- Something small that represents autumn.
- A creative interpretation of Meanwood Beck or the surrounding environment.
- The photograph that best represents how you experienced the walk.
- We'll finish with a short group discussion and final thoughts.
