Join Wex Photo Video for an evening with Arnhel de Serra and Isabel Hughes.

Arnhel de Serra studied at the famous school of Documentary Photography in Newport, Wales, set up by Magnum photographer David Hurn, in 1986. He has been photographing for The National Trust since 2009, bringing many years of experience to his photography working with clients nationally and internationally across the advertising, corporate and editorial sectors.

Arnhel's style reflects a warm candid approach to storytelling, using humour and observation as a central theme for building interest in his imagery, along with interpretations around the idea of 'Britishness'.

The MERL has a history of working with artists and photographers with an interest in the countryside.  The Museum has already hosted a presentation of Arnhel’s de Serra’s photographs and is working with him to explore further outlets for his work.

The country show dates back, in the UK, to the eighteenth century.  Designed to showcase the benefits of new technologies and improved animal husbandry, they also provided an opportunity for farmers and landowners to gather together and show their crops, livestock and other produce.  Today they provide, at once, a traditional and “timeless” view of rural life and a contemporary snapshot of an evolving way of life.  Arnhel de Serra has been photographing these shows across the country for over a decade, with a keen eye that captures something of the culture of British rural life, with both affection and humour.

Arnhel will be joined by Isabel Hughes is Associate Director of the Museum of English Rural Life (The MERL) at the University of Reading.  Her career has spanned curatorial, exhibitions and learning roles in various museums including the Royal Armouries, Hampshire Museums Service and the Livesey Museum, Southwark.  Most recently she project managed a redevelopment of the MERL to include 10 new gallery spaces under the banner of “Our Country Lives”.
