Wednesday 1st August - Sunday 30th September 2018
Please see store opening times
Rory Lewis has spent over a decade capturing many of the world’s most recognised faces; Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Tobias Menzies, Iain Glen, Natalie Dormer, and many more. Several of Rory’s portraits have been acquired by the National Portrait in London, and his work has been exhibited on both sides of the Atlantic.
Believing that so much of the portraiture commissioned in the press and print industry is reluctant to take risks, Rory loves to challenge that safety and introduce moments of spontaneity and awkwardness into imagery; too often the portraits of people, often notorious or famous, are aggrandising and sycophantic. Rory hopes to strip back some of the layers of artifice and enforce strangeness and quietness in its place.
For the first time, Rory will be exhibiting a retrospective of his most vivid and thought provoking portraits at the WEX Photographic Gallery in London. The exhibition will be Rory’s first sale show, offering a quintessential collection of iconic portraits.
Rory works between London & Los Angeles, with a wide variety of clients. His portrait photography has been commissioned by Pepsi, Universal, The British Army, The Times, The Guardian and Cancer Research UK to name a few.
The inspiration behind Rory’s work does not derive from Photographers, but from Portrait Painters. Hans Holbein the Younger, Titian, Caravaggio and Sir Thomas Lawrence have inspired many of Rory’s portraits and projects.
