Rory Lewis is a dedicated portrait photographer who has spent over a decade capturing many of the world’s most recognised faces. Sitters have included the likes of William Shatner, Sir John Major, Sir Derek Jacobi, Iain Glen, Rufus Sewell and Natalie Dormer.
Rory’s images have been exhibited on both sides of the Atlantic, and several of his iconic portraits have been acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in London. His most recent project is entitled ‘Soldiery’. This project took two years to finish and has been hailed as a national success story. The scope of Soldiery was both broad and deep: documenting the British Army of the 21st century. The exhibition was named by the BBC as “The ‘changing face’ of the British Army”.
Rory challenges the established norm when capturing images and instead, injects moments of spontaneity and even awkwardness into his imagery. He successfully shuns the aggrandising and sycophantic results, typically seen in portraits of the famous. Rory’s aim is to strip back the artificial layers of staid portraiture and replace it with strangeness and a sense of quiet.
Rory will be exhibiting a new project comprised of vivid and thought-provoking portraits at the Wex Photo Video store and gallery in London. The images on display will be available for purchase, enabling individuals to acquire limited edition prints of new and quintessential, iconic portraits. This exhibition includes stars of the stage and screen such as Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Ciarán Hinds, Tobias Menzies and more. Also included are political figures such as former prime minister David Cameron and members of the Royal Family such as Prince Michael of Kent.
Rory divides his time between London and Los Angeles, working with a wide variety of clients. In addition to his projects and private portraits, his photography has been commissioned by Pepsi, Universal, the British Army, The Times, The Guardian and Cancer Research UK, among others.
Rory draws immense inspiration from the masters of art including Hans Holbein the Younger, Titian, Caravaggio and Jusepe de Ribera. The result is an exciting and fascinating new collection.
