The class is design for those wishing to produce high quality documentary films for corporate, commercial or personal documentary film projects.

It is designed for the single shooter or those working in very small teams who are looking to tell fascinating stories with high quality cinematic looking visuals.

No experience in documentary filmmaking is required and the class aims to teach those with only modest equipment such a small mirrorless cameras or DLSRs.


Course Details:  

10.30am - Introduction and Filmmaking Basics 

  • Introductions inclusive of participants levels of experience.
  • Kit breakdown: camera choices, lens choices, overview of grip gear & lighting.

11.30am - Visual Storytelling for Documentaries

  • Lens selection - How to compose a shot.
  •        Understand the finer points of lighting technique for documentary and interview work. 
  •        How to use varied lighting and camera techniques to draw different emotions.
  • shooting coverage and the importance of b-roll
  • Cinematic camera techniques; how to best use your camera to tell stories.
  • Slow Motion

1pm - LUNCH 

1.45pm - Cinematic Interviews 

  • Practical lighting techniques and camera setups for interviews.
  • Talent management; how to get the best from your subject.
  • Capturing clean, quality audio. 

3.15pm Post Production 

  • The importance of good data management.
  • How to approach an edit.
  • Basic editing techniques.
  • Scoring your film.

Jon Scott

Jonathan J Scott is a freelance filmmaker with over a decade of experience within the industry. He regularly travels the world and has worked with some of the world’s largest brands such as Google, BBC, Discovery channel and UKTV, to produce captivating and cinematic content. 

 

Jonathan has experience using a very wide range of the camera systems available today from small portable DSLRs and mirrorless cameras like the GH5 and Sony Alpha range through to professional video cameras such as the Canon C300mkII, and Sony FS5/FS7. His passion for striking imagery, fascinating stories and beautiful light has enabled him to create a number of personal cinematic projects on the very smallest of budgets and he is constantly striving to help others by imparting his knowledge and share his love for filmmaking to enable them to do the same.
